Using a Smartphone to Record Video For Your Online Course

“Can I use my iPhone or android phone to record video for my online course?” This is probably the most common question I come across when talking about online course creation.

People really start stress and worry about the equipment they will need to produce their course.

Truth is, you don’t need to go and make any major outlays in order to produce a course. In fact a lot of experienced instructors will say, “Start with what you’ve got”.

In this video I demonstrate how to create a video using a smart phone. The video starts out with me just using my phones built in microphone, which isn’t ideal but as you can see the quality is still okay, just.

I then plug a Rode smartLav+ into the headphone jack and turn on a couple of interior lights. The Rode smartLav+ gives you broadcast quality audio, plus is works to reduce background noise.

While not professional, the lighting is adequate to do the job. The video produced is more than high enough quality to use in an online course.

Equipment Used:

Camera: Samsung Galaxy S4 – secondary camera

Lighting: Natural light plus selected interior household lights

Microphone: Rode smartLav+ Lavalier Microphone for iPhone and Smartphone
